XM Cruise Control

Post by Geraint »

Hi all

I have recently bought a '99 XM 2.1 Turbo Diesel Auto Estate and the Cruise Control does not work - dashboard switch lights up but the Cruise Control does not connect with flicking the lever. Any pointers would help

Thanks

With the motor running and cruise button pressed in, remove then plug in the violet cruise control relay in your underdash fusebox. You should feel it click on.

If it doesn't, the most likely culprit is oxidised connections in the brake pedal contact switch. Carefully prise the pedal cap off, and clean/polish its brass contacts with P2000 wet and dry sandpaper (used dry). This procedure is done with the motor off.

Regards, Adam.

If it's not that it could be that the vacuum hose has perished and split.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Thanks for the replies
As the sun is now fully out & summer has arrived I shall be looking to sort this problem out on Saturday.

I have already changed the cambelt, water pump, aux belt & idler pulley,
new oil in engine and gearbox ( my local Partco is now a a Citroen parts as well as Ford and I get a 20% trade discount) so I buy Citroen parts & oil. Car has been fully steam cleaned underneath ( with all the protectors removed from the wheel arches & replaced) any signs of rust treated and re-undercoated.

Will look to fit the e-crofting kit and new spheres (or re-charge)
Thank's again and no doubt I will be back with other problems as they arrive ( I did look at a 2.5 diesel but the milage was to high 185K and the clutch had not been changed and where is the space in the engine bay, but that engine is fantastic)

Nice car except for the auto bit
Why so?
Auto compliments the cruise control to the extent that without the auto box, the cruise control can even be a pain...

I'm just a bit tired of the "manual is better than everything else" brigade.

No shortage of them here; an acquaintance who teaches competitive driving refers to them as "knob-holders"...

But it is ;)
Auto's are far too complicated for me.
Give me a nice simple gearstick and clutch any day.

When you genuinely could dismantle and fix a manual box on the roadside (20 years ago) I might have agreed. But now, either is a tow home and a fair dose of mucking about to repair.

It's also uncanny how many of the manual cheer squad fawn over Flogs with the DSG.

I have only ever driven two automatics and then not very far, a few hundred miles.
I did enjoy driving them though.

I bought a Renault 30 TX (E) a few years ago but never drove it as it blew a head gasket when my brother tried it out. Quite disappointed and now wish I had fixed the gasket instead of letting it go back to the seller.

It is usual here to default to manual and no-one really thinks much about it.

There is the economy aspect too. Automatics around town and shortish trips are still more expensive to run and in britain there aren't that many long trips, unlike the U.S. & Australia.

I am not saying that manual is better than anything else, if I had to drive in a city I would probably welcome an auto, but this forum is mainly about DIY servicing and repairs and I don't think that there are many people on here that would tackle an auto box.

If you have an auto of little worth, gearbox failure will write it off, and they are not renowned for long life, a manual box will probably last the life of the car, even if it developes a fault it is usually still driveable.

My personal reasons for not running auto's, apart from the reliability problems, are poor efficiency giving increased fuel consumption and not allowing you to drive the way you want to.

The semi auto box in my DS addresses those problems :D and funnily enough that's just the type of "automatic" gearbox which now starting to be fitted by manufacturers effectively a manual box with the clutch controlled hydraulically "The latest technology" yeah right, well it was in 1955!
