If you'd like me to give a second opinion, text me when you're available and I'll pop over. I'm not able to do much today so will just be moping around. That's not to say that I can unravel the mystery, of course.

Did you fix this problem ?, i had long bits of thin metal coming out the BACK of my crank damper pulley for the last few days accompanied with a nasty rattling sound from the belt area, so i took off the damper pulley to find it was disintegrating and thin slithers of metal coming out the back (not the front) of the pulley.

So even if your damper pulley looks fine, get it off and check the back, you will probably find its knackered and in need of replacement

Nope, never did work out what it was. Some say it was the crank pulley but when I took it off it all seemed fine.

In my case when the lower pulley damper failed, the engine made a high pitched sound and the charge light came on as only the inner part of the pulley was turning. The only warning I got was a couple of days earlier in the mornings during startup that the engine sounded like there was a loose belt.

Anyway, if the debris are metal, it could be the metal seal of a bearing. How big are the debris?

Nope I never had any of that. First I knew of it was a sort of grinding noise and the smell of burning.

After I retrieved the debris the car sounded very rattly, all seemed fine though. They were about 6 inches long maybe a bit more
