C5 3.0 Exclusive SE Display not working.

Post by Andy B »

Hi all. I have for some strange reason, bought a 2001 (Y reg) C5 3.0 Exclusive SE Automatic. Bought it Friday 1-5-09. It has the colour display for sat nav, radio and many other things. Working fine on Friday but after ejecting a CD on Saturday evening, the display has stopped working.
CD player no longer works. Radio still works.
I have checked all the fuses that I could find and none have blown.
A couple of times the display has flickered (for a split second) as I start the car. When driving, I now have a Red Stop message on the normal dash area.
I welcome any ideas apart from, set fire to the car and claim the insurance!
Thanking you all in advance.

Andy,

I've just sorted out a similar problem with my C5.

The colour display is driven by a display ECU which is like a computer graphics card. It's enclosed in an aluminium case inside the dashboard.

I tried lots of combinations of tests and decided that the ECU was faulty. I googled it and found a company in Germany that can repair the ECU.

take a look at this site

http://www.eps-elektronik.com/citroen-c ... /35%20Navi

The unit pictured is your display ECU ref 22SY451-35.

I sent my ECU to them and they repaired it. My screen/sat nav etc. is now working.

I posted requests for help here but the problem is a little unusual and so not many of the chaps here had experienced this kind of problem. Here's my post

Hi Kev.
Thank you for the reply.
Too much money for me to spend on it.
My screen did not display any messages, it just went blank.
Working one minute and not the next.
Seemed to fail after ejecting a CD and the CD player no longer works.
At the moment, the car still drives. Just have no display.
Would a main dealer be able to confirm the fault?
If I fitted a secondhand unit, is it just a simple swap it over job?
I may be able to get a cheap secondhand unit.
Are the units the same in all C5s with the colour display?

Kind regards

One thing you could try is to press the right hand button on your instrument cluster.

Pressing this button gives you a 'blackout' effect which can be useful at night to reduce the glare from all the dashboard lights. I've read that an intermittant fault with this button can make the screen go blank. Press it a few times to clean up it's contact.

I tried main dealers and they just told me that it was expected with such an old car. They said it would cost too much to repair. I tried 2 main dealers. One said he'd never seen this colour screen system ???

The German company will charge whatever it costs to repair the ECU. They took ages to repair mine and I got the impression that they hadto do a fair amount of work. Their offered turn around was 1 week but it took about 6 weeks. You may be lucky with a 1 week turn around.. It would be a gamble.

I looked for a second hand ECU from various Citroen breakers but found nothing.

While my ECU was out for repair I fitted a radio which had been taken out of my daughter's Saxo.

This was a basic radio CD player which has an LCD display.

The single CD worked fine in this radio and I was also able to use the C5's CD changer.

The radio was like the one in the link below:-

eBay

This would be a good alternative if you can't fix the colour display. At least your sound system would work.

You'd need to pick up a constant live from the socket by the handbrake and a switched live from the cigar lighter.

Hi Kev
Is the unit located above the radio area or above the sat nav CD in the right hand side compartment?
Went to the garage today to put air in the tyres and it run fine but on the way back it was not running on all cylinders.
Radio stays on when I turn the ignition off.
Service light, engine light and stop warning lights are on.
Not bad for a car that I bought less than 48 hours ago!
I will try the dash light switch later, but need a rest now as I am a little fed up with it.

Do you know if the unit will be the same in other C5s or has it got to be a 3.0 Exclusive SE?

Thanking you in advance

Andy

The ignition coil packs are very common on this engine, dont drive it if it's misfiring or you will damage the catalysts.

Hi wheeler
Thank you for that advice.
How many things can go wrong with this car in such a short period of time?

The display ECU sits inside the dash and is mounted ontop of the sat nav CDrom housing.

You can access it if you remove the instrument cluster. You'll then see the ECU inside and to the right.

I believe that all of the early mk1 C5's with the colour screen and sat nav have the same display ECU.

Later mk1 C5's say late 2003/04 have an updated setup where I believe the screen is powered directly from the radio unit.

Before doing anything more drastic, it might be worth disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, then reconnecting, using the correct procedure (which has been posted here before). Low battery voltage can cause all sorts of odd glitches on these cars, which can be sorted by rebooting the main computer.

Also, there's a new coil pack on eBay (120414512240) - I've no connection with the seller, and know nothing about him, but the price looks pretty good!

Hi dnsey
Thank you very much for the information.
I have done a search but so far, I have not found any instructions about rebooting computers / connecting the battery.
I will keep searching though.

All the best

One important thing to add to that procedure, on a car fitted with satnav make sure the little red light on the CD drive in the drivers side glovebox is off before disconecting the battery (this may take longer than the 3 minutes after ignition off) as there is a high risk of (further in this case) damage to the screen/satnav ecu.
