1.9TDI1995 VSX estate sunroof motor

Post by isisalar »

The sunshine has prompted to me to have a go at sorting out my non working sunroof.
The motor seems to turn ok and will tilt the roof up and down. When it gets to the position to lower and slide back there is a nasty crunching/clicking sound from the motor area.
I removed the access panel today to check things out and discovered that 3 screws holding the motor in place(2 torq's and 1 phillips) were all loose and must have been for some time. I tightened them all up hoping it would work but no such luck!
It sounds to me like some sort of driving part has become loose or damaged.
Anyone got any advice?
Thanks
Paul
P.S I put a request up for a motor on 24/7 spares and find- a -part before writing this and I've already had one offer to deliver tuesday for £24.Fantastic service

Just switch the motor and make sure the guide for the sunroof is clear of debris etc. if it doesnt work then back to the drawing board :P

Isn't there a manual crank available in case of motor failure? If so, you could test the mechanism that way instead of risking a second replacement motor?

If its the same as the XM roof, the cables rust and jam it. If it will tilt that's a good sign, there is some movement, try and get some oil into the cable channel. the only way I know of getting to it is via the motor drive, but if you can open the roof far enough to see the plate that covers the cable, you can either drill a small hole in the top or remove the screws. The only problem with the second route is that you must make sure its watertight when you replace it.

Thanks for the replies.
The manual crank seems to jam at the same point as described.
I've loosened the motor and the gear teeth are damaged ie bent over a bit on the upper side, could this be enough to cause the problem?
Thanks
