Xantia gearbox query

Post by lexi »

This 2001 Hdi Xantia has a slight and occasional issue going into third. It`s not a problem once you get used to it. Very occasionally it will miss third and be in neutral. I also notice a vibration of sorts when you place hand on gearstick while driving.

Is this vibration due to the type of box in the Hdi cos my 1.9 don`t do it........although old Landrovers do  No noises or otherwise. I will maybe change the gearbox oil anyway for the light grade stuff.

Hi Lexi,

Is that a 110 HDi with the ML5 'box? If so then third being a bit "iffy" and the vibration is pretty much the norm.

The gearchange cable arrangements between the MK1 and MK2 cars using the ML5 'box changed considerably and the MK1 version is infinitely better but far more expensive to replace when it fails. The MK2 (as you will have) is cheaper in this respect and a lot of your issuses can be laid at the door of the cables being a bit worn. Sadly there's no adjustments on them.

It's not a bad idea to change the gearbox oil. Again the ML5 uses 75W/80 but it's a bit of a 'mare to change. Every little helps.

Basically, because the level plug is all but inaccessible it's best to measure what drains out and refill into the top breather the same amount of new oil. I find a funnel with a plastic tube extension works well for this.

I forget the full capacity of the 'box now. I'll check.

On my 2000 Xantia HDi in the ML5T gearbox there were 2,0 liters oil. I filled it through the reverse gear switch hole on the top of the box - after removing the air box.

Ok Guys.......another "must do" job done . 2 litres of dirty oil out. Looked like it had been in there since new.

This was my contraption for filling from underneath on ramps.
