1998 S reg, TD Auto ATF type???

Post by citroenxm »

Hi all,

Got a 1998 S reg Xantia TD AUTO - with the auto adaptive box in it, Id like to do a fluid change in the box before I sell her..

Firstly, is it possible to do a fluid change??
Second, Which fluid, Dex 2 or Dex 3 to go in??

Rgds

Hi Paul,

That'll be the AL4 'box

Yes, but only a partial change is possible as in the case of the 4HP20. The snag is that it's impossible to drain the torque convertor and that holds a lot.

There's a combined drain/level plug.

Fluid is the same incrediby expensive/exotic ESSO LT as used in the 4HP20 and best bought in a 20L drum.

Dex 2 or Dex 3 is not suitable.

I can supply you the sailent details of how to drain/refill/check level if you need them...

Hi Paul,

Here's the official guide: AL4 Oil Change Procedure

It's a PDF and may take a few moments to download..

Hope that's OK?

Paul,

Forgive me but I forgot something important. After changing the oil, you should really have a Lexia Diagnostic session run on the gearbox ECU to reset the oil wear counter.

If this triggers, it'll put the 'box into "limp home" mode (3rd gear emergency signified by the Snow and Sport lights flashing) and then it will be essential to have a Lexia session on it to reset this and the oil counter.

Not good if you're selling it...

If you are nearabouts, you're most welcome to pop round for a quick Lexia session...

As it says in the PDF the oil temperature is critical, it has to be within the stated temperatures when you undo the level plug, the most accurate way to get this right is to have a lexia plugged into it reading the oil temp sensor as you do it. I'm told anything outside these temperatures will throw the level way out & that there is a tolerance of +/- 100ml

Blimey!

All this electronic gadetry onthese new things....

I think I might leave her then! It goes forward and backwards.. I WAY WAY FAR AWAY Jim, in North Wales.. I have a Lexia man locally, who comes out for about 25 quid..

Ill look out for a spare AL4 box then JUST incase this one goes on the potential purchaser, infact, IF it does go on them, I think it WOULD be cheaper to do a manual conversion, Ill have to keep a pedal box ETC ETC from the Next Manual XUD to go...

Thanks to you All, you have frightened me off the job

It's not like an XM. The manual Xantia box needs a different subframe, different dash and engine harness.

You can get the fluid temp pretty close with an IR pyrometer, and it is self-regulating if the trans cooler health is OK.

Note the net amount of fluid added, and drive the car to get it Lexiated - the session does not have to be done straight away. However, check the software version - this is more important. If not done already, it needs the 2005 (?) update to operate its solenoids at 100Hz pulse frequency. Checking this aspect before sale is prudent.

Regards, Adam.

What has a Dash got to do with a gearbox, you just take out the Gear selector section on the clocks!

And a Harness, you'll only need the reversing light switch...

If worse comes of it, whats the hassle of a harness swap! MUCH MUCH cheaper then an auto box!!!

I really don't see what's so hard about changing the fluid in the AL4. It's just a well-documented procedure, where if you follow the instructions it comes together nicely. A mate changed his on a dirt-floored shed in Tasmania, then drove 120 miles to the dealer for a software upgrade and wear counter reset. Easier than a manual gearbox swap, and a better statement of sincerity to a potential buyer than saying "Here's a spare gearbox"...

AL4s that fail to proceed, have usually either had the wrong fluid put in, or not received the software/solenoid upgrade. This latter weakness was the root cause of their initial poor reputation. I've beaten on mine for approaching 20K miles because it's still under warranty (previous owner ignored the software upgrade necessity, then got suckered into a complete rebuilt trans), and it's honestly not showing any signs of the treatment I dish out.

The correct and ONLY oil to use is Esso LT71141. Pug or Cit dealers sell in it 2L bottles. Part No. 9736.22

It looks like liquid gold, costs the same as gold and smells like cats wee...

Saving? You'd be better off with a mortgage Paul!!!

I bought a 20L drum of the stuff and that cost nigh-on £140... I'd not be surprised if those 2L bottles are cheaper than £20 a pop..
