Xantia HDi Cooling fans contstantly running half speeed

Post by MikeT »

I'm posting this on behalf of Toby as he's probably just starting his shift now.

His fans are working half speed all the time the engine is running. Any pointers on how this might be and what is needed to be tested/checked?

The Mk II’s air conditioning will switch on when the airflow is set to demist the windscreen.
With air conditioning, the cooling fans are always spinning … at low speed when everything is normal.

I realise the fans will always run when the system is SWITCHED on, but not with the switch in the OFF, and I mean the Air Con main switch, next to the hazards..

What are you saying? That Window demist slider OVERRIDES the Air con switch weither its switched on ro off???

Yes, the slider set to demist the windscreen overrides the air conditioning switch:

I did suspect the AC was running as I could see movement in the sight glass but Toby assured me the switch was off and as a quick guess/experiment, I disconnected the receiver/dryer which made no difference to the fans or the sight glass view.

I didn't think to check the demist position but I'm sure Toby can answer that later.

It seems very strange but it is the case indeed.

A quick trip out to experiment shows the fans running constantly with air con switch OFF and the airflow set to windscreen.

On moving the slider across, the fans cut out. I do usually have the airflow set to windscreen most of the time

Thanks for that Malcolm and thank you Mike for posting this thread.

Thanks Clogzz & Tobi_HDi, for that piece of information. Like MikeT - I had an anxious few weeks concerned because my fans were running all the time, found (as a result of reading this) that my problem was the heater switch set to demist. Changed the switch position and all is fine. I have mentioned this to a few machanics, who were not aware of this. The Forum is a great place.
