Hi...

Pain in the arse from above, but possible with removing the top engine mount, or a little easyer from below IF YOU remove the Drivers drive shaft complete..

Its only a matter of exhaust off 2x 10mm spanners on each stud (pig to get at), intake pipes (both) off, Oil drain rubber hose off, (1 hose clip, push pipe off), unscrew oil FEED pipe (17mm) and half way up the feed pipe the small 8mm screw securing the feed pipe to the block (I think), manifold studs out, 13mm nuts, then use two nuts locked to gether to screw the studs out, takening the studs out, of 6 only, enables the turbo to come straight downwards,

Then reverse it, or however you find easyest when removing it..

Whats happened? Whats the reason for removal??

Rgds

Thanks for the informative reply especially spanner sizes, the reason I'm thinking of changing it is, I have had a problem with it smoking on start up, and lumpy running for 20sec then it settles down and drives as sweet as a nut. But if I am stuck in traffic with it idling for any length of time then accelerate I get a big cloud of smoke out of the exhaust it then clears and all is ok.i don't have to top the oil up between sevicings so it is not burning much. I have changed the glow plugs and the injectors, I thought it might be valve stems but there is no smoke going down hill on the over run.The smoke is bluish white and apart from that the car drives well.

That sounds more like injectors!! Unless you've already done them..

Id be inclined to try another set of injectors first.. A turbo problem I think would burn oil, as the Diesel Turbos DO NOT have Coolant cooling, like petrol turbos, because DERV's are more leanient...

So that would rule out water loos through the turbo, and oil would be blue.. sounds more like an injector problem...

Sounds like turbo oil seals to me, you can get re-furb kits for about £40 to £50 and the turbo itself is fairly easy to re build yourself with a few simple tools.

As i said though Dean, Coolant DOES NOT run through the turbos on the XUD's

I know they do on the XM Petrols... Been there... got one.. want to sell one :-p

If the oil seals have gone, the intercooler pipes WILL be oil Saturated...

Check the intercooler pipes internals and see if they are oil coated

Could be Paul, but if the Exhaust side oil seal is failing oil runs into the exhaust at idle then when reved the oil burns with a blue ish white smoke, injectors are quicker and easyer to check though so definatly worth a look first.

I must admit at £40 a shot I'm not in the market for another set of injectors, I was thinking on idle if the the turbo oil seal leaks slightly you might only notice it as I do with the cloud when you accelerate and wind the turbo up kicking the burning oil out the exhaust.
p.s who sells the turbo kits?

Hi
this may sound silly but we have 4 or 5 local customers whose cars were showing the symptoms that you are getting from your car this is because they were running on red diesel / heating oil on changing back to regular pump diesel the problems dissapeared only to come back when going back to red diesel

cheers
