What am I driving?

Post by isisalar »

New job, new company Van,joy oh joy, it's a citroen.
It's a Y reg Dispatch 1.9 Diesel,of course with no handbook. Can anyone tell me anything about it,is it common rail?is it turbocharged? Can it run on veg oil etc?what sort of milage should I expect?
Most important, what should the tyre pressures be?
I've noticed another two at the firm and one is badged Fiat.and the other is a Peugot. How much of a Citroen is it?
Seemed to be a bit thirsty and sluggish so last week I checked the tyre pressures and they ranged from 19-24PSI.I've put them up to 45 and it certainly seems to run better, yet to see if the consumption improves. It's carrying a lot of weight.
Look forward to your replies.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,

I expect it's a DW8 engine at that age. It's basically an evolution of the XUD9 and was the last IDI engine before the HDi became universal. It could also be found in the early Pug 206.

It's most likely an N/A in the van application. If it is an N/A DW8 it should return very good fuel economy.

Most, if not all, had Lucas pumps so running on veg is most certainly not to be recommended

Can you pop up a picture of the engine bay and then a positive ID can be made.

Citroen badges = Dispatch,
Fiat badges = Scudo,
Peugeot badges = Expert.

All virtually identical, minor differences in trim and accessories (and the badges of course). All made on the same production lines.

On a Y plate, it could be a 1.9 (DW8) or a 2.0HDi.

IIRC, when the HDi engines were introduced in early 2000, the popular 1.9TD was dropped. If you wanted more power and/or better economy than the basic DW8 1.9 (N/A) you had to pay for one of the (N/A) HDi engines.

IMHO, the Dispatch/Expert/Scudo is a civilised drive (for a van).

Take a look at this for where the smaller vans will fit although you get the feeling it's not his van!

After all would you want to chance scraping your own van?

Also with the (Cash in hand) soundtrack is he a cowboy, or a country builder?

If you get my train of Orange Blossom thought!

Apparently when the song was first written, it was fiddle music, how appropriate!

I used to drive a 1.9TD Dispatch, loved it, especially with the gearstick on the dash.
Loads of power, handled well although tended to rear up like a speed boat when you floored it :D

I used to drive one of these on an X plate, as it was a bit slow, to say the least, I thought I would also ask about the motor!

Here's a picture of a similar, but later vehicle.

Image

It had a diesel engine with a rotary pump on it, and as for the performance well it was nicknamed the Cantgo.

So, would anyone know what that had in it?

The one in the picture has a 1.2, the one I had the pleasure not of driving, felt like it certainly had a small lump in it.

Yea thats a Renault Kangoo!!

NO Relation to the PSA stuff AT ALL not even the engine, Renault have ALWAYS had their own DERV unit - EVEN thought they sound VERY similar.. I think the actuall CC is about 1896cc....

Ugly or what for a van, the PSA/Fiat van is much better on the eye!!

Well yes, hence the nickname "Cantgo!"

It was N/A pre HDi & certainly as suggested slow ZZZZZzzzzz!

I think it was more like 50% of the CC you suggest, and to find out I made a call to Renault U.K. Customer Services.

It was a 1.1 with 65bhp zzzZZZZzzz!!

What a performer not!

Edit.......That's what you call a "real street sleeper!"
