Xantia HDI 110 Spitting Oil from Exhaust

Post by mattpc »

With the car idling from cold on the drive my 99 Xantia Exc Estate 110 HDI is spitting a bit of oil from the exhaust. Mileage is 160k and the car gets a lot of use. 30k in the last year.

Any ideas why it is doing this and how worried should I be? Thanks.

First of all :

Be sure it really is engine oil, and not some black moisture from the rust and sooth in the exhaust.

Hold a cloth against the exos pipe while engine is idling. The cloth should be large enough you wont burn yourself, and the exhaust is still able to breathe through.
After one minute or so, there will be enough condensation on the cloth to judge what it really is made of.

Smudge your fingertips with the condsensate and try if it really feels like engine oil between your fingers.
The normal sooth will be like black ink, nothing that resembles oil.
If it evidently is oil, then its the turbo hot side seal that is leaking oil out in the exhaust.
Thats about the most common reason at all for engine oil in the exhaust, except it would a be a very rare problem as recent turbos are VERY reliable and long lasting.
