I'm a little stuck on this issue; wondering how they are applied to cars (specifically Xantiæ). Given the sheer numbers of product, it must be other than raw sequences?

Hi Adam,
The RP (or ORGA) number is just a straight number sequence incremented daily. It identifies the day of production.
Have a look in the Citroen Technical Guide and near the end it has a table of RP numbers by date and instruction on how to calculate it.
