A recent s2 Xantia I've purchased has the digital counter with the built in
service timer. I'm just wondering if this information is stored in the speedo
head or logged into the ECU like the older generation Xant immobilisers?
I've not got where it is flashing a reminder spanner at me so is this a
main dealer reset or something any man and his PC can get round?
More to the point, how reliable and tamperproof does this make the
mileage if it takes a few minutes to swap the main ECU or is it still
back at the good old speedo?

There is a very simple procedure for resetting the service indicator. I can't remember for sure but it's something like holding the trip reset as you turn the ignition on.
I think the electronic speedos were introduced to make mileage adjustment easier, it certainly wasn't a problem for the guy who sold me mine.

Thanks guys, useful info to know about the service icon.
I must admit to feeling very cynical about this whole digital dash business:
it seems all too easy and convenient to concoct any old mileage you fancy
with clever software or is the interface for the speedo well protected - still
no real difference to the old 'analogue' method then!?
Has anyone tried swapping different s2 Xantia speedo heads and discovered
if the digital mileometer retains the correct or replacement mileage?
I've swapped old Xantia keypads for new one's with decent rubberised
covering on the most used keys and the code is retained in the car via
the ECU.

Some citroens do a 10 second countdown to zero & some the digits change one by one till it goes to the service interval. cant remember which models & years do which, either way the reset procedure is pretty much the same.citronut wrote:i thought it was as above but then wait for the 10sec count down to get to zero

On non multiplexed citroens (eg mk2 xantia) the milage is definitely stored only in the instrument panel, If you take the panel & swap it to another the milage stays with the panel. Multiplexed citroens are a different matter, the milage is stored in both the instrument panel and the BSI.
Im afraid clocking a car with a digital dash can be a lot easier, in some cases it can be done without even taking the panel out & is done via the OBD socket. Even if the milage is stored in more than one place that can be altered aswell.
On some new BMW's the milage is stored in 4 places, the instrument panel, body computer, the key & somewhere else i cant remember. There are companies advertising that they can reset all 4 memories.
