I have a note that a deep cranked (deep offset) 12mm ring spanner is needed to remove and fit glow plugs on the XUD9 (1.9TD) engine.
I'm about to make an expedition to fill a few gaps in my tool-chest - I need a set of deep sockets for a start. Can anyone give me an authoritative answer to the question,
"Can I use a deep 12mm socket to remove and fit glow plugs on this engine, or is a deep cranked 12mm ring spanner required?"
Many thanks
Guy

hi Guy, some of the gp's can only be done with a spanner. i must admit i have never needed anything other that a normal ring/open spanner to get at them... I could be lucky though....
Others sill have used much more 'friendly' tools to do this job
the easier to get to ones can be done with a 12mm socket I think, a deep one is not essential from memory..

as John said the two behind the pump need a spanner, and yes i find it a lot easyer with a crancked 12mm spanner especialy the one nearest the at the cam belt end of the head, also for this one i dangle the new plug back into position on the end of a thin length of wire (locking wire), because if you drop it down the back of the pump you might not ever see it again
ps. i bought a cheap set of crancked spanners from LIDAL's
regards malcolm

Tne other things that are very handy when doing glowplugs is a good 8mm ring spanner for the electrical connections, a magnet on a stick and a big lump of Blu-Tak
Oh and not forgetting a good dose of Malcolm's finest "percywhatsit"

Thanks for the advice, everyone.
The concensus seems to be that a deep-cranked (offset) ring spanner is a great help with glowplugs. I've had a motley set of imperial cranked ring spanners for years and always preferred them to ring-and-open ended. But only recently found metric ones.
Clarke CHT103 {Machine Mart order code 040212890 £10.56 incl VAT} 6x7, 8x9, 10x11, 12x13, 14x15, 16x17, 18x19. At this price, they're probably a bit cheap and cheerful, but for those of us who don't wield spanners for a living they're probably perfectly adequate.
I went to Machine Mart on Sunday to take advantage of their 'Sale' (15% off) to fill a few gaps in my tool-box - just my luck they didn't have any of the above in stock!
