Shim tool?

Post by MikeT »

I've got a question from a Saxo owner that I hope someone may be able to answer..

.. anyone know if the tool can be easily made or does it have to be bought?

Thanks

For doing what Mike?

I presume cam clearance shims.. Conventional wisdom is that it's still easier to treat it like an XUD and whip the cam out to swap shims.

I once had a Suzuki GS450 Motorbike with shimmed cams and I did in fact make a tool for that but it was still a bit of a faff but with chain-driven cams, less of a faff then taking the cams out...

is it shimed or are the conventionaly adjustable tappets, or even hydraulic tappets, i can't remember

if the y are shims i would not have thought you could get them out without removing the cam, unless they sit in a reases on top of the followers

I was told it has the shims "on top" means nothing to me which I can only guess the cam is under them? Is the saxo a TU engine?

Yep, the TUD is shimmed and the shims are on top of the buckets (i.e. between the cam and bucket).

The tool presses the bucket down and allows the old shim to be slipped out for clearance adjustment.

some TU lumps have adjustable tappets and others like the 1.6 TU dose have hydrauliuc cam followers, but if yours has shims and if as Jim said shims on top of cam followers (buckets), then yes you should be able to remove and re/fit them without removeing the cam

what saxo and year is it Mike

Must be a very late registered on if it's an 04 plate, they stopped making saxos in sometime in 2003 i think. I would guess it's a 1.5 diesel as thats the only saxo engine that is shimmed, the petrols are either hydralic tappets or adjustable with rockers.
Does the car have a hot starting problem by any chance ? valve clearances to tight ?
The tool can save a lot of time & saves disturbing the timing belt if you dont have to.
Heres the tool if that help, suppose it could be made > http://www.sealey.co.uk/PLPageBuilder.a ... ctid=10386

he could buy it from me for around £700 to keep as a spare TEA HE
