05 C5 brake light and ESP/ASR light

Post by mop »

Hi a newbie happy to find a Citroen forum

I recently purchased a 2005 C5 1.6 HDI design. 13,000 miles.

While parked and engine running I noticed the brake lights were not coming on so I tapped the pedal a few times and no lights,
I then pushed the pedal as far down as it would go,
went nearly went to the floor I got a bleep and a warning message saying
INFO ESP/ASR SYSTEM Faulty and the ESP/ASR light comes on the dash and the pedal is very spongy.

I switched the car off and restarted it and everything was back to normal
but still no brake lights I pushed the pedal down again and the same
warnings and lights came on. Switched off restarted and tried the brakes while driving brakes worked fine and have done so every time driving
and the brake lights sometimes work. But if parked engine on I always
get the above problem.

I have found out there was a Recall for a defective valve in the vacuum
pump not sure if mines has been done will find out next week I hope
could this be a cause

Anyone please help.

Thank You
John

No idea if the missing stoplight is connected with the fault message.

Your C5 has a conventional brake pedal switch, but its a bit odd located because of a rather long pedal axle reaching over to the passenger side.
Have a peep here for a possible dislodged cable or connector from the switch.

Also try your handbook to locate any fuse for the stoplights.

Being able to push the pedal right to the floor would worry me. It sounds like a master cylinder malfunction.

An ineffective vacuum should make it practically impossible to push to the floor.

And another opportunity to complain that they don't use proper Citroen brakes.

Brake lights fixed, took the switch out cleaned and oiled and set. thxs :D

Also no ESP/ESR errors now, I can't believe this was a fix but and more a coincidence but having learned a lot in a few weeks C5 electrics are capable of anything. On the high level brake light a bulb was out replaced it and no more errors. :?
