xsara hdi remote locking problem and alternator

help changed the pads on my xsara yesterday went to try them out and got a beep from dash and the battery light was on checked the battery voltage 12v no charge from alternator also the remote key fob will not open close doors bought a new battery for fob tried to reanisialise the key fob but still wont work just seems wiered that both problems started at same time car runs fine no other problems dont want to buy new alternator if there is a simple fix please help thanks mark

If you only have 12 volts across the battery with the engine running you have an alternator problem. I can't see that your work on the brakes can have caused the failure - probably just coincidence. Check the wiring and your alternator belt though.
