doh,[:I][B)]
i have snapped off one of the rocker cover nuts [xx(], thats the capped nuts with the rubber sealing washer.
none of the stud is poking out, so am unable to grip the remaining & unscrew the remining part.
what i'm asking, is it possable to replaced the stud without removal of the rocker cover?, or is it 'off with the cover'

You really mean the rocker COVER - not the cylinder HEAD ?
Removing the outside top cover (that covers the calves/cam) from any engine is more or less an easy job - depending on exterior components fitted on to the cover surface. It can never compare to removing a cylinder head job.
So - no question - off the cover job you're facing.
Leaving the problem as is means prohibitive oil spill.
Hopefully you find the stud bit long enough to grip on.
If not - by far the most easy solution is to wireweld on a steel (not galvanised or stainless) nut to the stud bit - then simply unscrew the bit.....
It's an easy & quick workshop job - if you do'nt have acces to a wirewelder.
The new stud bolt must be 8/8 steel to withstand normal service works after refitting.

i have looked into this further, looks like i will be removing the rocker cover as the studs are installed in two parts, to replace the top half of the stud (it now comes in two pieces) small bottom part & large top part, am unable to remove top part without removing rocker cover.
will have to wait for a nice hot & dry day
