Wheel changing query - tripod vs. jack

Post by JohnW »

Can someone tell me why I can't (according to the handbook) change wheels on my Xantia by propping one corner up on the highest suspension setting and then letting it fully down, as I understand is the standard way on earlier models?
Seems a complete waste to have a jack.
Thanks

Because surely the wheel would still be on the ground would it not? For the wheel to retract into the arch, it relies on the weight on the car to cause the strut to retract, if you prop the car up the wheel will remain on the ground.

By prop it up I assume you mean put blocks under the appropriate suspension arm. It works on the front, but the back wheel disappears into the wheel arch.
Seriously, I think safety is the problem here. There is no fine control over the car sinking. It can go down pretty fast. Blocks firing out from under the car at X mph doesn't bear thinking about! It's fine in theory, but 2 minutes getting the jack out seems like a good idea to me!
