ZX Heated Rear Window

Post by JohnStuart »

The heated rear window on my sons ZX will not come on when the switch is pushed. The switch fails to light up but a click can be heard when pushed. The connectors to the rear screen appear to be intact as is the screen but a meter is not showing any voltage being applied on the connectors. The fuses have been tested and seem good.

John - it seems fairly obvious that you (your son) are facing an instrument panel tear down tracking the missing 12V supply to both the switch lamp & the rear screen. The switch lamp MAY have a burned bulb.
If lucky<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle> - you may trace the problem down to a bad relay (the one you can hear clicking) or a loose fit connector on the switch/relay/fusebox.

The HRW switches also fail on the ZX.
We used to sell a few of them here and when I worked at a Dealers.
Seem to remember theres a change at about RP6171.
The other thing to check as Anders says is the relay, its a timer relay on these to prevent the HRW being left on too long, they have been known to fail in the past.

I don't know the model, but it would be sensible to start with a simple continuity test from the fuse box (with fuse out) to the heated rear window. You don't want to rip the dash apart and then find that it's just a cracked solder joint at the window end of the wire, do you? It's always sad to see grown-ups cry. [:D]
