Timing belt tensioner help

Post by roscopervis »

My timing belt tensioner has finally failed on my 2.0 16v 155 hp Xantia. However I have run into some problems which, given its a Citroen, doesn't surprise me. I have got a new tensioner from a Peugeot garage but it doesnt look nothing like the old one, even though on the computer it says its the right one. So I bought it.
It has the same dimensions as the old one but wheras the old one was held onto the engine by a threaded bolt and nut kinda like (engine)|-t-e-n-[]
Where [] is the nut, the new one is reversed so the bolt is supposed to be threaded into the engine and tightened using the spanner end of the bolt. This doesnt work in practice however as there is nowhere to thread the new bolt in.
I think there is a plate on which the old tensioner sat. Does anybody know if removing that plate would yield a hole to thread into?
Haynes in their wisdom didn't include this engine in the Xantia book and the Cit/Pug garages have been no help at all as they havent seen this engine!
If anyone has a ZX haynes book could they look up the 2.0 16v bit about timing belts and tensioners and tell me hat do do. It would be most appreciated!

have a look at my reply to this post.as far as im aware the 2.0 16v was never recalled for this problem and the tensioner remains un-changed,the 1.8 16v however was and it changed to a spring loaded tensioner which looks & bolts on completely different. http://www.andyspares.com/discussionfor ... So if you've got the 155hp engine, thats what we call an XU10J4 and only fitted to the Xantia 2.0 16v upto 7/95.
If thats the case, have a look at this, I think that the tensioner in question is number 7? Let me know. That one is Citroen dealer only.Just quote the part number against Number 7 to your friendly local dealer and ask why they could'nt find it! The other tensioner, the one without the bracket we do stock, its the same as the BX 16v. (082920 = our ref N13170)Hope this helps.

7 does indeed correspond with my car's tensioner. I went to Citroen first to price one up and on the screen a similar diagram came up and I said its the front one which corresponded to number 11 on their diagram. There were two XU10J4 diagrams but each part was the same. I got it from a Pug garage as my brother works there and gets discount. That part number is 0830.37. That is different from the one you gave. It is the same size bit the bearing is a roller bearing and is made in what seems like one piece, whereas the old one used ball bearings and has two separate pieces, with one sitting inside the other.
I think this is another example of both Citroen and Peugeot not knowing their buttocks from their breasts!
Another question, if the timing has slipped due to the tensioner has failed (by one tooth I imagine) what damage is likely to have been caused, bearing in mind it failed at standstill and on idle and was only run for about 10 seconds?

According to my information the 83014 is the tensioner idler pulley for the 1.8 16v engine.
I suggest that you order the 82931 !!!!
I just checked, and 082931 is a good number, priced at £33.11.
Looks like someone looked up the wrong thing for you. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

If the engine was still running at switch off then you almost certainly got away with it. if the tensioner failure stopped the engine then you almost certainly didn't.
