PINKING (10K BOOST)

Post by CITMAN »

HAS ANYONE USED THIS PRODUCT WHICH CLAIMS TO DECOKE AN ENGINE. IS IT SAFE TO USE. AND CAN ANYONE SAY THAT IT HAS MADE A WORTHWHILE DIFFERENCE TO THERE ENGINE.
IN MY CASE I HAVE 1995 CITROEN ZX 1.4I WITH 74000 MILES AND PINKS WHEN UNDER LOAD. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW I CAN CURE THE PINKING TROUBLE WITH MY ENGINE. IT DOESNT HAVE A KNOCK SENSOR.

I have a similar car, '96 1.4i ZX 74000 miles and it does the same thing. Not all the time but theres a definite pinking under load. Was considering changing the Lambda Probe to see if that has any effect. And ideas please let me know...

Must say that the pinking noise does get on my nerves. But I have noticed that when the weather warms up the pinking seems to subside a little. But when the weather gets cold it pinks.
Ive had mine down citroen specialist who put it on his computer and found no faults. He told me try and run it on different fuel this I did no difference, he then said to try a different set of spark plugs. And also he said that the head may need to come off for a decoke I then proceeded to say goodbye.
If I were you I would try it on super unleaded because it seems to be ok on it i.e. not pink. But the cost of it puts me off. Im going to try shell optimax to see if cleans out the engine as it claims too.
Another question. When your engine is cold and the weather is also cold. Is it noisy i.e. a slight knocking sound until it warms up. When mine is warm it is smooth but when starting from cold its a little noisy.
Im going to try the 10K Boost but have been warned against using it because of the amount of carbon its supposed to push put into the cat. Worth ago anyway.

That pinking drived me crazy, when I owned Visa 1.1. It was also a bit 'weather dependand'. Tried mentioned products, but no effects.
My BX was also pinking under heavy load. Problem was solved when head gasket was changed and head, valves and pistons decarbonised. It's fine since than (6 years).

IF the pinking varies with temperature this suggests to me that making the mixture slightly richer might help. Afterall, pinking is not a result of too much advance alone, as in a weak mixture can also cause it.

In the case of my Visa, when air-pressure was low, pinking was less noticable, because the mixture was richer. But, on modern engines, there shouldn't be any difference, as mixture is controlled by ECU.

As your car is fuel injected, I would suspect that the ECU is not retarding the engine during acceleration - hence the pinking. This could be due to an intake manifold air leak or a sensor failure.
I don't know if your car has a MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure transmitter) or maybe a hot wire air mass sensor, but whichever (I would guess a MAP), it needs to be checked.
Basically the throttle butterfly has a position sensor (variable pot.) which tells the engine you want more power. More fuel is injected. The engine also need to know how hard its working, it gets this data from the manifold vacuum, and advances or retards the spark timing accordingly.
