I have been driving my 2 Xantia V6 Exclusives on alternate trips for the last few days, and it has made me realise how nice my old one is.

I find that I like the automatic wipers on the Mk2, but I like the steering wheel, the radio, the seats, the remote plip, of the Mk1.

My Mk1 also feels like a newer, tauter car when driving (but it has done 50,000 miles more). This is partly due to having (I don't know why) less power assistance on the steering. It also has nicer gearchanges.

So I have I dilemma, which one should I keep?

In your heart, I believe you know the answer to this one already,
but your head is telling you the lower miles and 'newness' of the s2
are better. This is a purely subjective call as strengths and weaknesses
appear to balance out between the two; I do prefer the more
individualistic appearance of the s1 - it's not trying to be a Xsara;
whilst that may not a bad car, yours IS supposed to be a Xantia!!!

The nicer car to drive from your interface with it, the 'feel' as it were
is the s1! Don't fight it! End of! :D

Ok. Though I was keeping an eye out for the s1 you didn't want!! Doh!

The gearbox oil level plug is right at the back of the box, you'll need to get right under the car to see it, but once you're under there it's fairly obvious. When you know where it is you can get to it without having to get quite so far in. The level should be checked warm, engine running, having first run the select lever through all positions. I take it you will be doing an oil change if you keep it.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

I had a look under the air filter, and surprise... it has a dipstick! The transmission fluid is however... pink. At a guess I think that it has been drained once and refilled with dextron. This might explain the poor gear changes.

So I will change the fluid again (a couple of times).

Does anyone know a better deal on the fluid than 20 litres for £124 delivered from http://www.lubricants.org/?path=item&id=378 ?

Anyone one else want 6.6l for £40 odd to split the cost?

Just got another Xantia, mirror and transmission fluid

I changed the transmission fluid yesterday. Got 5 litres out of it by idling the engine for a few seconds after the initial flow had stopped.

After running a few miles with the correct fluid, the gearchange is vastly improved. the gear change is still a little 'softer' than on my old car, but can't really be faulted now.

I will probably give it another change in a few days to clense the system a bit more.

I have been distracted by other projects, but I got back to the Mk2 Xantia, and have got a working indexing mirror, without sacrificing the Mk1 mirror.

By chance, I came across a Jaguar XJ40 mirror, and it had a motor unit that looked just like the Xantia's, and about 9 wires. So I bought it for £5.

On dismanting and comparing it with the Xantia Mk1 mirror, it appeared to have an identical PCB, but the PCB had different soldered and wire links fitted.

I relinked the PCB to match the Xantia Mk1 sample, spliced the wires into the Xantia Mk2 mirror harness, and assembled it into the casing from the Xantia Mk2 non-indexed mirror. And it works. 8)
