C5 Wheels Non centre thingy

Post by mooseshaver »

How do I describe the problem of the C5 Wheels not being centred to a tyre person so they can balance my wheels right?

Or you could tell them the wheels do not have a centre hole.

On my XM I have had on car wheel balances performed for the front wheels without too many dramas. On a C5 it would probably be easier.

Solid centre wheels, most decent tyre fitters & dealers should have an adaptor for their balancer to allow the wheel to be attatched to it through the stud holes rather than throught the hole in the middle, it shoud also be able to adapt for 3,4 & 5 stud wheels as the old AX chicago had 3 stud alloys with solid centres.

The first time HiQ did mine they were spot on. That was after taking them back to Kw1kfit 3 times and them still being wrong.

I went to HiQ again recently but they had to have 2 attempts to get them right this time. If you're still getting a slight vibration at 60 to 70 mph, take them back again.

I stood with the fitter while he was doing them the second time and explained that they are very difficult to get right. We agreed to get the balance figures down to about 0 to 2 rather than just below 5.

Most fitters I've come across aren't careful enough when they put the wheels on the adaptor. You need to tighten all four bolts and tighten them in the correct manner and sequence for the job to be right. Like Den169 says, forget Kw1kfit: they don't seem properly trained to do the job, in my opinion.

I had mine done at ATS and they were excellent, contrary to expectations.

Also contrary to the usual tales it seems that the dealers often have better prices on tyres and fitting/balancing than a lot of independents.

Not always, of course.

My experience is that it is not the balancing itself that they get wrong, but the centering of the wheel on the adapter.

I have seen 2 or 3 different types of adapter, the worst is a universal one where the 4 studs can be moved in and out ofr different PCD wheels.

I think even on the adapters with fixed studs, some seem to be easier to use correctly than others.

Last time I had a vibration that would not go away, it turned out to be a tyre (or maybe 2) that was going out of round at speed. Only cured by a new set of tyres.

I went back, and they asked at what speed the vibration stops. I never thought of finding that out, so they advised me to drive faster without getting a speeding ticket and push through the vibration. So I have found out the vibration starts at 55 and stops at 95. Could it be anything else other than unbalanced tyres

Thats a big range for a wheel wobble iv'e had many over the years but they usually stop in about a 10mph increase in speed.

I've been back, they had a look and told me it had shed a weight.
So from wed afternoon to Sat morning it had managed to lose a weight. Despite not being near any kerbs or speed bumps.
Will try and see tonight if its cured.
