Steering Rack Lubrication

Last evening Xac and I had a close look at his new Xantia. One small problem is a split steering rack gaiter. Luckily it's the easy one on the RH side.

The rack has lost quite a lot of lubricant all over the subframe and back of the engine.

Question is, when the gaiter is replaced, how should the rack be refilled with lubricant, how much and what type?

Hi Jim :)

Jim it should just be grease in there shouldn't it ? - I dont now what type..

If lubricant has gone everywhere, I can only think LHM has been firstly getting into the rack?

Fortunately John, It did not look or feel like LHM. In fact the consistency of the stuff was more like CV joint grease, albeit just a tad thinner.

At a guess, I'd suggest moly grease would do the trick. The heat from adjacent exhaust pipes will keep it nice and runny.

There's a local PTFE gearbox additive I'd also put in some of, but mentioning that and cars tends to generate a reaction in some quarters!

I'm curious why you want a second xantia xac, I hope cassy is ok?

Because one is wonderful, two are teriffic and three are tremendous...

I'm spreading the love Mike :)

A friend currently has a petrol Megane that's cost her a fair bit in garage bills.
The plan is to do up Jenny, and then sell her to my friend for what she's cost me, then at least she'll have a decent car that's reliable and simple to keep working (and also can run on veg as she drives from glastonbury to chichester once a month).
