C5 Estate Wiper

Post by mooseshaver »

Hello, I had my wiper arm repalced a few weeks ago, since then the wiper only wipes a small angle in the middle of the window rather than the 180 degress it should.
I took it back to the dealer and was told the motor was not turning 180 degrees and that I had damaged it by not getting the arm replaced straight away and that it was not worth fixing.
I've put up with it for a week or so before finding time to look myself and the motor does turn 180 degrees, but the wiper arm is very very stiff to move. I'm sure it was really easy before.
Can anyone with a C5 estate have a go at moving their wiper with their hand with the tailgate up and see if tis easy to move please?

This may be of no use what-so-ever, but if the design is similar to the Xantia, the inner (turning) spindle gets dirty and won't turn inside the outer sleeve. The solution is a long winded affair of WD40ing the spindle and turning it by hand to assist the motor until it frees and the motor can do the work by itself.

If the design is similar, any fault with the outer sleeve will prevent the spindle from turning properly. If this problem appeared after a new arm was fitted, the fitting could be the problem…

But, having reread your post it would appear that the motor is ok with the arm off. If the question is "does the arm flex up and down as it moves across the screen" then I think the answer is yes. The arm should be free at the joint - it is pulled down to the screen by the spring, but the joint should be free to flex.

Thanks for you reply Dave.
When you open the glass bit of the boot on a c5 Estate the wiper comes with it and the motor stays where it is. Its just a pointy thing that slots into the motor wheel and moves the wiper.
I think they have done the bolt up too tight but I am guessing.

Just checked mine and the arm (with the window open) moves with no resistance at all. Sounds like they have screwed up fitting the new arm or fitted a dud.
They should have seen that when they did it too!

Well Myglaren I've been to dealer, and now have a working rear wiper.
Thanks again for checking for me

My pleasure and absolutely no hardship.

Good to see the dealer did the job properly this time. They should have donkey ears for a stunt like that.
