Xsara Clutch Pedal

Post by birstall »

Went to rescue my better half. Clutch pedal was flat to the floor, gear in neutral. Pulled clutch pedal back up. Managed to get car into third gear after pushing down hill to pick up a bit of speed and then drove it home.

Is this just a broken clutch cable, or is it likely to be something more serious.

Seems to drive OK in third.

There is a slight noise when you press the pedal down fully. Could this just be the end of the cable thrashing around somewhere, or something worse?

Xsara is the petrol 1.8i? 1999.

Any thoughts appreciated.

We've been quoted £350 for repair by independent mechanics.

Does this seem reasonable?

Thanks

hiya Pete

yes, is the short answer...

My 1.8 xantia clutch went one day.. pedal to floor.. garage quoted above £500

 (they also wrote sh*troen on the yellow key fob, which kinda helped my decision)

I politely said no.. and drove 100 miles home without stopping ;)

I think £350 is about right for a garage, its a few hours work, even if you have done a few clutches...

In the case of my clutch, what had happened was the plastic release bearing had been incorrectly fitted when the car had had a recent clutch change.. the release bearing melted and finally forced its way through the diaphragm..

With yours I would get someone to help check that the pedal is indeed actuating the release arm... an easy check.. one of you pressing pedeal and one looking at bellhousing area..

if there is no actuation, you may find the repair a whole lot cheaper than £350....
