Saxo 1.4 petrol cutting out when hot

Post by Paul S »

My 1997 Saxo 175k miles has started to cut out on the move on hot days when in traffic. Some times it is just a hesitation and some times it lasts 5 or 6 seconds. The fan seems to be coming on OK and the coolant is not overheating. The engine light doesn't come on when it does this.

It seems like something under the bonnet has become temperature sensitive. Anyone have an idea where to start?

Its not a 16v VTS though, being a 96 model i would guess its the old style coil pack with plug leads.

Your right, the car in question though is a 1.4 VSX not a VTS or a VTR.
The 16v coils are completely different to the 8v versions.

Air Leak???

My 91' 1.4i ZX did the exact same thing, but it was still bad even if cold.

The hesitation/jerking was ridiculous and it just kept cutting out, would fire straight back up again if it did cut out mid driving (such as slowing to a junction), that I learned to keep my hand ready for the keys.

If i had been driving for an hour, parked up for 20 mins, it would take a bit longer for it to start up to.

Coolant temp sensor on the side of the head. Often mis-diagnosed as coil pack or stepper motor. Think its a green one and a brown one. Works out about £40 for the pair from the stealers, as most nen-gen suppliers can't seem to get them right!

Might not be for sure, but I reckon it probably is. Usually screws the idling and fuelling up a treat too.
