Washers query

Post by alan s »

Earlier this week it rained over here hrd enough to need to use wipers & washers. Due to the length of time that has passed since they were last used, the wiper blades fell apart & the washers didn't operate.
Upon removing the tanks for the washers, front & rear, and cleaning them out as well as clearing the lines, I noticed that I has two different looking washer motors; one was made by "Denso" in Japan whilst the other was obviously European. I assumed that one must have a larger capacity or pressure to push to the rear window but then I removed them from another BX 16V of the same year model & noticed that again there were two varying brands but whereas the Jap one was on my rear window, on the other car it was on the front. Has anyone else ever noticed this?
Also, when cleaned out & refitted, I still couldn't get any pressure from my front washer. I eventually fitted a piece of rubber hose & sucked water through at which point it really pumped extremely well. Has anyone else ever noticed this phenomena? It's just that as it doesn't have to draw water due to its location on the bottom of the tank, I'm trying to figure out how you could get air in the pump.
For the record, the washer on one car had a large dollop of rust about 4" from the outlet that was blocking the pipe, which makes you wonder what they put in some of these windscreen washer additives as this has had it in the water all its life. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>
