Anyone know where it is on a Mk2 V6 Xantia?
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

On the XM its just above where the o/s driveshaft enters the diff housing, I would think it would be the same on the Xantia unless it has a completely different gearbox.

I wondered if it was that one as it's called a tachometer sensor in the parts list. Have yet to see it in real life, only looking at diagrams at the moment.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

That sounds like it. It fits downward from the top, I think its held in place by a 10mm head bolt.
