Citroen Servicing nr Cambridge/Ely

Post by LeeDJC »

Hi all - I haven't been here for some time now. Mainly due to the fact that the old Xantias went, and a new Berlingo came in.

It's like a breath of fresh air, just getting in, starting it up and not having to worry about what's going to break down next, lol (probably shot myself in the foot by saying that)

Anyway - it's due it's first 15k service since buying it. Unfortunately I have no time to do it any more, so wondering if anybody knew of a decent garage local to the Cambridge/Ely area (movd up here a little while ago, and don't know the good garages from the dodgy ones!)

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

You could try asking Pleiades at Sawtry. They are Citroen hydraulic specialists, I dont think they do repairs but they might be able to point you in the direction of someone who does.

I used to live just South of Cambridge and apart from the main dealer at Duxford there was a Cit specialist near to a village called Foxton (he was on the main Rd to Royston but Cambs end). I can't recall his name and it is quite a way from Ely but he was good - a friend had a BX and used to go there.

I have lived in Royston for the last 3 years, and have never noticed a Citroen specialist on the A10, so maybe they are no longer there?

There is a non-franchised workshop in Harston (on the right as you drive towards Cambridge), but I have not noticed an Citroens parked there.

Nearer Foxton (on the same side of the road) is a disused petrol station that has a business specialising in Lotuses.

The Duxford Garage (Main Dealer) is good, but not cheap.

I can answer this one!

I live near Ely, work in Cambridge, but always religiously drive south of Cambridge to use:

Melbourn Garage
118-120 High Street
Melbourn
Royston
Herts
SG8 6AL
01763 263344

Richard (front-of-house, parts, organisation) and Colin (owner, mechanic) there have looked after a variety of Citroens for me for years - Colin is a good CX spannerman, so very little scares him :-). He doesn't overcharge, he does work that's necessary and only that's necessary, and as far as I can tell has always been straight with me. When a part seems expensive (I needed a new Xantia driveshaft once) they'll even have a go at sourcing from the local breakers first in order to save you some money.

It's a small village garage, the labour rate is about half that of a main dealer, I think it's currently about £40/hour. Oh, and they have courtesy cars to get you back to Cambridge - a variety of entertainingly-shagged BXs and (currently) my old TD Xantia.

I have no connection with the garage other than as a very satisfied customer.

Pete, can I pop him into the recommended garages section of the forum?

Please do. I was going to post him there a while ago but it said I couldn't and I should contact the forum admins instead, but there was no email address for the forum admins so it was unclear what I was expected to do. So I gave up :-).

Cheers

I am feeling a bit silly now, as I worked in Melbourn for 5 years, and even got MOTs there. It is definitely not on the main road!

If driving from the Cambridge direction, it is easiest to find if you take the turning off the A10 signposted for the Melbourn Technology Centre (not the Melbourn Science Park).

Yes, I tend to come off the A10 at the first turn - the Garden Centre and golf centre and whatever, then follow that right through Melbourn - straight across the lights. The garage is then at the top of the hill[1] on the right hand side.

Cheers
Pete

Well I'm pleased that my initial reply wasn't a complete non hoper. There did used to be someone as I described and he did all the things the chap who has been recommended does! It was a while back since I lived in Cambs so I guess he has closed now.

If ever I need a good Cit mechanic in Cambs I know where to look now!

Thanks for helping to sort my reply out - I would have felt bad if anyone had made a special trip to find him and he wasn't there.
