Most likely a gearbox out problem, as the 3.rd gear syncro mechanism is truly shot.

In DIY terms you need a second hand gearbox for replacement.

Problem is the time scale repairing a gearbox, as it is very time consuming doing this delicate repair job.
You may however still get something in return on your defective box Ebaying it - as anyone else may find it interesting for spareparts repairing a similar box with a different problem.
Or you could do exactly that depending on your time resources.

Leo,

Are you able to engage third gear when stationary or with the engine stopped? If so, check the linkages between the gearstick and the 'box and also check the integrity of the engine mountings, especially the lower one. If the engine has moved back due to a failed mount, this can result in gear selection problems.

If it is only on the move that you have the problem then it will be the 3rd/4th synchro hub worn or it's spring being broken. It is unfortunately very common if the 'box has in any way been abused or oil changes neglected.

If the problem is worn synchro hubs, a good replacement 'box is the sensible way forward as Anders says. By gearbox standards the BE3 is DIY friendly and not hard to repair but the killer for this job is the cost of a replacement synchro hub at c.£125 dealer only. Good second-hand hubs on their own are hard to come by and the only source is to striop another scrap 'box, hoping it is OK. The good thing is that any BE3 'box will supply a hub.
