Xantia fuel gauge

Post by Bren »

Does anybody else have a problem with their fuel gauge? If my car is filled to the brim the needle goes off the scale and sticks - I have to give it a tap tp release it. As the level drops to the quarter mark the gauge becomes unreliable - the low warning light comes on when the reserve is being used. According to the gauge , a full tank has nearly gone in approx. 450 miles - this equates to around 32 MPG. Surely this is'nt right?

It's about as accurate as your elbow is at telling temperatures.
Mine varies on ambient temperature too, and often I'll "gain" fuel as I'm driving.
Have to tap the top of the dashboard on a full tank as well.

As said before, only an indication not accurate at all. On my last Xantia it would read higher when the batery voltage was lower, sometimes by as much as 1/4 tank. Got a new Xantia last week and its gauge is all over the place if I thump the top of the dashboard it can jump up or down 1/4 of a tank.

Does anyone know if the low fuel light works independantly of the gauge? I've now done over 600 miles since I filled up and its still showing 1/2 full, somehow I don't believe it.

Ran out of petrol within sight of the usual petrol station, with no lighting of the low level lamp.
The gauge is buried in the tank, with the pump.
Getting at the float inside the tank needs disconnection of the pressurised fuel hoses.
There are 4 wires into the tank, with 2 for the gauge, as per BoL, so the low level lamp is switched electronically inside the instrument panel.
This picture from Xantiaclub Nederland shows the dodgy gauge connectors on a LHD dash panel.
