Xantia exhaust Blown

Noticed yesterday that my exhaust is blowing.It's at the rear of the rear box where the pipe clamps to the silencer it seems to have gone all round.The annnoying thing is that the pipe and the silencer seem to be in good condition.I know that there are various repair kits available but they never last long IMO.Some repair paste has been applied in the past.Can this be welded?Anyone willing to do it?It looks like an original part and I'm loth to give it to an exhaust specialist as I've always found that replacements touch the body somewhere and on my last Xantia was a lot noisier than before.
Any advice please

Although it would be technically possible for a skilled worker to fabricate a repair, it's not easy as a new section of pipe would have to be welded in and a fairly accurate "bell" would need to be formed on the end of the new pipe to meet with the silencer. This joint can be a very devil to seal at the best of times and a fabricated one might be even more difficult. The cost for this fairly skilled piece of work may be as much or more than a replacement pipe.

Given that the pipe from the manifold to the silencer is very long-lived, it really makes sense to replace it with an new one and be done with it and if yours hstill has a cat, it's an ideal time to get rid of it :D If you buy a relacement and fit it youself, it needn't be massively expensive. For the reasons you state, I like to fit my own and then you know it's done right. If you do, you'll need a new manifold joint kit as it's vital to replace the "brillo pad" gasket between the manifold and down-pipe.

Quite often, again due to their long life, a good pipe can often be found in scrap yards.

is it gone forward of the clamp or behind, if its forward then a good indipendant exhaust company keep repair sections of diferant diamiters including the bell end flange, although saying that as Jim said it might be cheaper to just fit the new section, as the one piece from down pipe to rear box is only about 36 squide from GSF this is probably the best fix

even more so if you want to do away with the CAT

You don't mean the *front* of the rear box, by any chance?

The stub on the front of the box is prone to failure, but can be repaired quite successfully using sheet steel (bend up a tube, and snip the end so that it can be flared out at 90 degrees), followed by glass fibre mat and epoxy leak sealer (this end of the exhaust is quite cool).

Done carefully, the repair will outlive the box.

Different model, but I treated my Xantia V6 to new centre and rear silencers today.

The parts were £190delivered from http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk which I think is a good price for a V6. You can order the silencers on line, but annoyingly, the clamps only seem to be available if ordering by phone. It fitted perfectly.

The old system (about 4 years old) had primarily failed due to fatigue cracks in the front face of the centre silencer, probably due to the suspended weight of the system.

Note that the Citroen online parts list (for the V6) gives the wrong part for the clamp between the cat and the centre section. It should actually be the same clamp as between the centre and rear sections.
