...starts of in the morning as -50 degrees rising to a balmy 4 degrees!!!!
As it's only external temperature reading I'm not that bothered but what's the gen on this? Is it worth replacing or too prohibitive financially?

Had the same thing on my C5 a few years back. I can confirm that it makes the climate control do some very strange things
The thermistor lives in the base of the N/S mirror. It's a bit of a PITA to get to, removing the mirror cover itself is best done on a warm day as the plastic is just that bit more flexible and the very fragile clips are less likely to break.
I cut and joined the new thermistor wires onto the old ones, and used some heat shrink tubing to seal the soldered joints. Its been absolutely fine ever since.
