Help - AX speedo cable.

Post by mbunting »

A simple job, replace the bulb in the dash.
Yeah, right !
I have the wneel off, the top and bottom panels off, the intrument assembly unscrewed..
But I can't get it to move enough to get the speedo cable out !
My hands are rather large ( about the size of an MOT Cert ), the only way I can get access is from underneath, where there appears to be a back moulding that the instruments sit into ( with a hole in it for the speedo cable ).
How is the speedo cable fixed into the speedo ?

Can't speak for an AX but on BX & CX models, the speedo comes in two pieces and has a white plastic screw together connector about 18" away fom wher it connects into the gearbox. Easiest trick is to disconnect at that point & push a few inches back into the cab area then at least you have something to play with.
Be very careful with where the cable fits to the back of the speedo, again based on teh theory that it's similar to a BX, because it's made of a brittle white crappy plastic and when refitting be sure you don't put any strain on it where it connects to the speedo by pulling too hard when reconecting.
Hopefully, that may get you out of trouble (and not into it) <img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle> <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>

It is the same on an AX, the cable is split in two as described. As far as I recall the cable is a push fit onto the back of the instrument panel, but I am not sure if it also has a clippy bit to hold it in, I don't think so. There was b*gger all slack in the cable once it was squeezed behind the dash and glovebox to make it's way to the gearbox because it was squeezed so tightly through some small gaps, so take it easy when pulling on it.
