johninderbyshire,

Are you thinking its the fan resister?
I looked through some old posts and noticed you had the same problem with yours due to the fan not working on the slow speed?

yes. i did the head gasket and then the two blue temp sensors, when the bloke at citroen parts told me about resistors. £6 for the pair, and sure enough one of the coils had a break in it and it took all of two minutes to fit them. if i remember, you lift the bonnet, and take off the black plastic trim where there are two rectangular plastic blocks above each other (slightly bigger than matchbox size) held in with a screw. its worth a look.

I think you could've hit the nail on the head there. It would certainly fit these symptoms.

Hi,
Firstly a big thank you to johninderbyshire for the PM & phone call :D

I'll take a look at the coils tomorrow & let you know if that's the problem.

The coils are # 7 & 8 in this diagram:

What I don't understand is why the fan would run at all during normal driving :? ....surely radiators these days can cope with cooling the water from the engine without needing the fan to run at a low speed.

I seem to recall that electric fans on cars only ever came on when you were stuck in traffic on a hot day.

Thanks for everyone's help & advice so far

Was the aircon being used at the time? The fan should run at low speed while the aircon is on to help to dissipate the extra heat from the aircon condenser.

nick,
No the aircon wasn't on.

Ok have just been out & removed the coils & guess what one of them is broken.

The other coil is fine with the element being nice & clean just like new.

So it looks like I have the exact same problem that johninderbyshire suffered, thanks for your help john & putting me on the right track

I'll get a coil ordered from Citroen this morning as I doubt they will have one in stock & will let you all know how it goes.

Thanks once again for all the great help & advice offered.

Well I rang my local Citroen dealer & to my surprise they had the part in stock :o ( part # 1267A9 Resistor @ £7.48 )

I have now fitted the new coil & am happy to report that all is working as it should :D ...the slow fan speed now kicks in just before the temp gauge reaches the 90 degree mark & the car will quite happily tick over without the STOP & temp warning light kicking in....So a result :D

I would just like to thank everyone that offered advice & help on this problem & a very big thank you to johninderbyshire for putting me / us on the right track with this problem.

Thank you all very much.

Regards to all.
