C5 1.6 HDi?

Post by GB »

Has anyone got any experience with the C5 1.6 HDi?

I am now considering getting a C5 diesel, preferably 2004/2005 model and preferably an estate, under 60K miles.

Is the 1.6 HDi reliable? Any major mechanical issues?
Are the clutch/transmission/brakes the same as on the 2.0 model, or are they fitted with some inferior budget gear?
What are they like performance-wise?
Is it worth getting one or should I just look at the 2.0 HDi instead?

I do about 350 miles per week now (Xantia 2.0 16v, about 29mpg) so I find the HDi fuel economy is particularly appealing - just not sure which HDi to get.

Cheers,

I've only driven a 1.6 HDi in a smaller car (Mazda3)and it performed well, but i suspect when loaded up it would be a different story. However it does have overboost taking it to 191lb ft and the road tax will be nice and cheap. I would suggest trying both and seeing what suits you.

The 2Ltr Hdi was a good car, but the 1.6 Hdi is a great car. I have driven both and felt no difference, but it is said that any previous problems with the earlier Hdi has been corrected with the C5 model from 2003 onwards

I can only say that I have driven a C4 HDi 1600, as well as a Pug 307 estate with the same engine, and they both fly!

Economy is startling as well - great engine which is as grunty as the older 2L

Well, I just bought a 54 reg C5 VTR 2.0 HDi hatch, 32K miles, full service history, immaculate condition.

I test drove both the 1.6 and 2.0, and although the 1.6 is surprisingly fast, I found the 2.0 felt just much more relaxing to drive - I guess it's the extra torque.
