Removing carpets

Post by Fox »

I guess its time to bite the bullet and remove the carpets from my Xantia to dry them out completely - it's still rather wet following the blocked sunroof drain, and I'm sure the water is causing my electrical problems.
So, whats the best way to do it? Remove every seat? Roughly how long will it take and what is the road noise like with them removed?

Fox,
There was a topic before regarding removing the carpets before but I can't find it right now. As far as I remember it said you have to remove chairs AND the middle console ..... appearantly it does take quite some time!
Cheers,
John

Thanks for the advice. How long did it take from start to 'ready to dry it out'? I've heard people say its going to take me all day :(

My recent experience removing the carpet (passenger side) for drying purposes. All in-my-opinion, and just what I did - I will take no responsibility for your foolisness in trusting me - use this information at your own risk! (sorry for the disclaimer!)
Removed front passenger seat - 5 Torx bolts on the runners - lifted off (pushed upwards) bit of plastic that covers the seat-belt mounting on the seat near the door - unbolt the seat-belt mount on the seat-end. After unbolting, tilt seat backwards to unhitch any wiring to the bottom of the seat (seems to be something to do with the air-bag under there - I have no electric seats or seat heaters - my ass is hot enough ;). Removed seat to garage.
take off the upside-down-T-shaped cover on the post between front and rear door (two Torx bolts then unclip/pull downwards).
Lift off the rubber door seals (which are just push-on), front and rear on passenger side along the bottom (I didn't do this - just pulled the carpet out from the clips that mate with the seals - the carpet is stapled to these so had to re-staple them which took some extra time - lifting the door seal makes refiiting much easier)
Undo the two bolts underneath the passenger (rear seat) ashtray in the central collumn and raise the column slightly. (I didn't remove the central conslole)
Take out the upper piece of carpet above where the passeger rests their feet. Check in the foot well for any other bolts or strange plastic fixings attaching the carpet - remvove if present.
Take out the front piece of carpet - it should be _fairly_ free on the outer-side (nearer the doors) - you might have to pull a bit where it is under the central console. In one place under the central console, there is a hole in the carpet with something bolted through it. I didn't bother to remove it - just pull and it will tear, but underneat the console where no-one will ever see it (there is a bit that is under 1-cm wide - it will tear here) - it is only a tiny bit torn and this tear will cause no problem whatsoever.
after some pulling, you should have the front piece of carpet out. The rear piece I left in the car, but freed it up as much as I could without taking out the rear seat so I could wring it out and prop it up with various things so the air could get underneath.
In ture Haynes tradition 'refitting is the reversal of removal'.
Comments on refitting:
unclip the gear-stick cover and the immobiliser key-pad from the central column so you can see the carpet underneath and poke/prod it with a screw driver to get it in place.
If you rip any of the staples out of the 'carpet-gripper' thing that fits under the door seals, you will have to re-staple them after removing the orignal staple(s). I did re-stapling with a heavy-duty staple gun with the long-end pointing inside the car and from underneath (if the carpet had been in place) - you have to bend the platic a bit while pushing with ths staple gun - try to get the staples angled so that pulling on the carpet doesn't encourage the carpet to slide off the staples (i.e. pointing outwards towards the door).
I guess it took me about 3 hours to take out the carpet - and about 2-hours to refit (excluding tea breaks, of course ;), but much of it I was making up as I went along - reckon I could have it out in hour now... If I had to take out the central console, I have no idea.
If you want to totally remove the rear piece of carpet, you will have to take out the drivers seat and the back seat too. (it _may_ be possible to not totally remove the drivers seat - rather just loosen the front bolts and remove the back ones and slide the carpet out from under, but I havn't tried it).
Hope this is of some use.
Cheers,
Nat

looks like i will be doing this job as well, due to condensation in my xantia.
have checked the drain holes for the sunroof,
nothing is getting caught in the door seals,
no wires are getting traped when on the rear light clusters,
no water is getting through the rear wiper spindle hole on the rear window.[b/]
just got one more thing to try (i belive!!<img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>):-
RE APPLYING SEALANT TO THE FRONT WINDOWSCREEN from the inside,
failing that,
REMOVAL OF THE CARPETS <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle> it looks like such fun !!
oh what a challaging lives we lead <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
