Post by RugbyPete »

After a quote of £140 to change the plugs i decided to go alone.

So, any tips from previous experience, or should i get the one si can off and take anything in its way off aswell??

Going to soak the area in wd40 hours before too, even overnight

Glow plug change info Here

Have fun!

One word of caution - if the plugs are tight once you have initially crakced them go VERY carefully with lots of penetrating fluid - there have been a few cases recently of lumps shearing off the cylinder head whilst changing glow plugs

You don't mention what engine or car you are changing the plugs on so the following is based on a ZX 1.9TD.

You will have to remove the inter-cooler but that's about it.

The only plug that is hard to get to is the one behind the injection pump, if the pump is the Bosch type, if the engine has the Lucas pump this plug is a lot easier to get to.

If the Bosch pump is fitted I find a stepped ring spanner does the job ok.

When fitting the new plugs give the threads a smear of copper grease, this will make them a breeze to get out in the future

I find a magnetic probe very useful when removing and replacing the nuts that secure the cables.

My only suggestion, apart from reading up the tips in the previous link is.

Warm the engine first, ally expands further than the steel plugs, this will help a lot, ok so you are gonna burn your pinkies on the head, but these will heal eventually and that costs nuffin! as opposed to cracking the ally around the glow plugs, this will not heal and it will cost.

Also get yourself a short length of leak off pipe, when putting the new plugs in, thread the leak off pipe over the small thread on the plug, you can then wind them in most of the way with ease, only leaving a small turn with the spanner.

And last, when the new plugs are ready to go in, Grease the blerdy threads!!!!

Regards
Slim.
