Phase 1 Xantia 2.1 Service questions

Post by Sphinx »

Hello all, I've got a couple of quick questions regarding servicing a Xantia 2.1 TD.

Can the sump plug washer be re-used or is it one of those crush washers? (I'd rather know this now than get half way through and realise I need a washer afterall...which I've done before lol)

What is the best oil for these engines? (mine's on 104k btw)

Cheers

The sump washer should be replaced, it's £0.64.
I know a lot of people who don't, but when you're fresh oil leaks it's really annoying.

If it's the first time you service it a new sump plug isn't a bad idea either it's £2.00. I always find them a bit rounded when I get a new car and replace them on the first service. The new ones have an allen key hole in the middle which stops me overtightening them with a socket as well.

I like gtd magnetec oil the best, but anything which you'd consider quality will be fine.

I'm using comma at the minute because magnatec is very hard to find.

Avoid budget rubbish oil though, it seems like a bargain but isn't really very good for the engine.

Don't know what you're capacity is as I'm 1.9td, but be careful you buy enough. On the 1.9td A 5L oil tub is enough but a lot of companys make 4.5L and I have to buy a 1L as well because 4.5 is to little.

I managed to change the washer on my Renault 21 and only loose about a teacup of oil. (a bit of preparation and a carefully placed thumb)

Unless the washer is really thin you can re-use it. I regularly replace them (once during my ownership if that) but keep a new one handy so if I find one is too thin to be re-used I can replace it.

It only seals the oil in - its not under pressure.

I had a 2.1 from new and it came with a crush washer fitted. Since all four of our cars use 14mm plugs, I buy them half a dozen at a time and use a new one each oil change.
