ZX Diesel pump

Post by srx600 »

My diesel pump has started to leak around the throttle shaft. Ive located an injection specialist who can fix it but I need to remove the pump. Removal shouldnt present too many problems, however I'm concerned about re-timing the pump on re-assembly. Most of the timing kits cost around £100-£150, so not cheap.
My question is, do you think it would be sufficient to scribe around the pump mounting points and use these when re-assembling, or is the adjustment very critical and can only be done using a dial gauge based timing kit ?

Provided it's the same pump going back on the same engine carrier, a scrible line using a fine scriber across the mounting flange and onto the carrier will be perfectly adequate.

When refitting, ensure the mounting bolts are very tight. The pump vibrates plenty and can shackle the nuts loose if not perfectly tight and fitted with washers.

The bottom flange mounting nut is hard to get a conventional spanner onto. A 13mm ring "Lazy C" spanner is perfect. It's a normal spanner bent into a sort of "C" shape. Get one with an 11mm and 13mm head and you have the ideal tool for removing that difficult bolt on the rear timing cover too.

A Lucas pump does not need to be removed from the car to renew these gaskets but unfortunately a Bosch one does..

When removing the injection pipes from the injectors, counter-hold the injectors to prevent them unscrewing from the head.

Observe clinical clenliness and cover the injectors with fingers from disposable gloves or condoms after disconnecting the pipes. Likewise the pipes. Keep 'em somewhere very clean. Cover the all orifices on the pump after removal as well.

Cheers for that, useful tip on the 'C' spanner I'll try and get hold of one.
