Xantia auto diesel faulty

Post by bigjl2 »

Does anybody on the forum know much about the gearbox on these cars, there is one on ebay at the moment that pulls away in 2nd gear all the time and apparently the oil smells burnt the car has had a fluid change and this did not help, it changes into 4th only sometimes and changes with a thump, but apparently doesn't slip, does anybody know how muh it would cost for a recon box for one of these, as the car has low miles, is an sx with what looks like unmarked interior, and it looks clean as it is the facelift model in silver, any thoughts or advise gratefully recieved, as I can't speak to my autobox bloke till monday but the auction ends tomorrow. Justin.

There have been issues with the ZF box and confusion between Dexron 2 and 3 fluids which can cause all manner of problems. A search of this site will provide many hours of bedtime reading.

There are many long established auto box specialists around who may well be able to repair the box - its probably worth having a chat to someone local and seeing if they sound hopeful.

There used to be loads of adverts from reconditioners in places like Exchange and Mart. They may still be there for all I know. The probably advertise on the internet as well.

Just had a look in the old haynes and it says that teh box in the turbo diesels is the AL4 box, did a google and came up with a lot of problems with this box but it would seem that a lot of the problems are caused by dodgy connections and the need for solenoids to be changed inside the box, but the box seems to be overall not bad, I will bid to a level that allows £400 for repairs.

£400 for repairs seems hopeful, I'd budget more around the £1200 mark.

My max bid is £265 and car has t&t, and is a s plate hatch, the car only has 30k on it, which seems to be correct, if I get it for this it may be profitable too break, the reason I reckon it is worth a punt is the owner has done 3000 miles like this, and it was like it when bought off ebay last year(july).
