Ventilation Fan Blower Not Working

Post by andmcit »

Nothing when the selector is on any setting for the fan
on my '95 Xantia 19TD SX non AC. :(

No doubt this problem is as old as the hills on the forum
but the search option doesn't presently work!

Now before anyone tells me the problem is the ignition
switch, the HRW works perfectly which I understand is
a directly associated item to check with this issue!!?

Next obvious suggestion of course is the fan motor itself!!

I haven't had a chance to get upside down in the passenger
or driver's footwell yet, but what I don't get is it merrily
worked without ANY hicups or poor running right up until the
next day's trip to work where I'm now getting nothing at all.
Usually I've encountered signs of imminent disaster with
such items rather than instant inoperation! Just lucky?
Damned cold on the way to work...

Is this usually the symptom of a failed motor or would
there be ageing signs obvious beforehand?
I've checked the fuses too BTW.

What'd be my next port of call?

First thing to check is if you have volts at the fan across the thick black and red wires. That will tell you if you are dealing with a supply fault or fan fault. It might be worth giving the fan a thump - if the brushes have stopped making contact this might be enough to bring it back into life. Unless someone's been there before you, there shouldn't be any relays on a MK1, and without climate there's no control board to worry about, so fault finding should be pretty straightforward.

mine dose pack up sometimes, on inspection i have found one of the terminals in the 4 pin(?) plug going into the fan unit has been making a bad conection at some point before me ownning the car, as said terminal has melted the plastic of the plug, to get it going again i just give it a wiggle,

yer i know its not a propper fix but all the time this works it will just get put on the back burnner

I had the same problem when this forum was down last year: http://bxclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7477

Loose connection was the cause, bit of fiddling and tape to hold everything firmly in place did the trick.

Good luck!

There’s a resistor to regulate the speed.
This 170ºC fuse goes open and the motor stops.
No warning, no cause, it just lets go.
