Ran out of diesel....now have EM light

Post by Toby_HDi »

Ok what could be causing this? I ran out of diesel this morning and now the EM light is on (after putting some in and giving all the crap a blast through). Is there anyway to read the codes without going to Citroen or having a code reader? Is the light likely to go out after a few more miles?

Thanks

Try cracking all the injector unions one by one (the 17mm nut on top of the injectors) until fuel comes out. Then disconnect the battery for 5 mins and reconnect.

Make sure you have your stereo code first though!

Crack them until fuel comes out and then tighten them up again? Or tighten them up after battery is reconnected?

I guess mrbump was assuming its an XUD.

You definitely don't want to crack the fuel unions on an HDi.
I think the light will go off on its own, if not it needs to be taken to someone with the appropriate computer to clear the fault codes.

Out of curiosity what would happen if I did?

On an HDi the pressures involved are way higher than on a traditional diesel injection system. Get part of your body in the way and it will literally cut right through the bone!
Also the official recommendation on an HDi is that if the injector unions are disconnected for any reason then the complete set of pipes from the fuel rail to injectors should be replaced with new. There is a possible risk of contaminating the fuel system too.

Yoeah sorry that wasnt the best advice for HDi. Some reason I thought it was 2.1.

It still is most likelt air in the lines though, or a stored code. Not sure about the functioning of the HDi ecu, but a reset may still cure it.

I'd change the fuel filter asap and check the tank pickup. If you get c**p through to the injection pump or injectors it's a really big bill.

Good luck with it though.

Cheers fellas. It has now gone out of its own accord. Put a bit more diesel and fuel gauge is stuck now lol. Assume its just the sender unit stuck. Hopefully will sort it next time I fill up.

Connector pressure

Post by paulbx »

If you wanted to crack the unions what should you do on a Hdi?

Wait x hours for it to de pressure or is there another way?

As post by Nick, this is the official line -

The official line is you must wait 30 seconds after the engine is switched off before starting work on the fuel system.
