xantia indicators and rear wiper fused

Post by c.morewood »

Could anyone help please? '98 TDSX Rear wiper and indicators failed whilst sitting in traffic in light rain yesterday. I identified fuse 28 as being blown and tried a replacement and a which blew .. I tried a higher rating , which blew as well.
Any ideas where I should look please?
regards,
Chris

Hi Chris -

Please NEVER again try a higher fuse rating, when replacing a fuse that instantly burns out. A blown rated fuse ALWAYS means an abnormality is presented in the protected circuit.
This is true both in your home and in your car

I bet you have the wellknown Xantia hatch door syndrome : broken wires at or near the roof outlets. Only solution is to replace wires, as the wiring insulation is brittle and will leave the wiring unprotected.

Thanks Anders,
Could you give me any tips on how to get the rubber wire protectors off?
I just wonder if there is an easier way than just pulling them of as I don't want to damage any more wires.
Thanks,
Chris

Had this problem on my Xantia, approximately halfway between Denmark and Austria :( Eventually had to replace the rear viper motor.

Thanks Mads,
That could be the answer as the rear wiper was very reluctant to move over the past 6 months.
But why would the fuse blow if the wiper switch was off and only the indicators selected?
The hazzards work fine presumably they're on a different circuit and wiring?
All suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

What I found was that the fuse did blow irrespectively if I had the wiper on or off. What I did was to pull the wires from the wiper unit in the rear.. That cured the fuse problem, and the indicators started to work again (nice when you are driving on the "autobahn" 8) ). When I got home I measured the wiper unit, and it seemed to be faulty. I replaced it, and there has been no problem since.

So, I recommend you try and pull the plug from the rear wiper unit. If the fuse doesn't blow the problem must be in that unit, and you can take it from there.

Brilliant Mads!!
That worked.. I don't understand the wiring .. but I'll be getting another rear wiper motor. AND I also discovered that the nut which seals the wiper arm was loose and allowng water into the rear door .. maybe thats what caused the motor to give up.

Hi Chris,

Glad that you found the problem. You can not prevent some water entering the door through the spindle hole, the membrane is there to lead that water down and out. Therefore: Be careful when you put the membrane back on and make sure it seals correctly. I use Silicone sealant for mine.

Thanks again Mads, New second hand wiper motor in place and everything siliconed back in place... I'm looking forward to a nice dry car now.
Cheers,
Chris
