c5 hdi estate mpg

Post by toldem_oldham »

Ive bought a c5 2.0hdi sx estate comfy as a xant loads of room like the xant but im dissapointed with the mpg the computer on dash states 32-34mpg and that is telling the truth worked it out on calc,im doing same miles as in the xant but i was averaging 42-45,or is it just me having a heavier right foot but on the up side the cost of the uk road tax is £115 for the c5 ive got were its £190 for the xant and looking at the doors the hinges aint going to snap off like the xant (estate only i think) :? so cant complain to much hey

Doesnt sound too good to me. Is the engine getting warm enough? Reset the trip computer aswell, many people don't bother so it averages out up to 2000 miles worth of driving which may not be relevant to how you are driving now!

Yes ive reset the computer and what do you mean by engine getting warm enough the temp gauge shows under halfway when been running a while and oil temp gauge stays low but i must say the heat from the heater is poor when set to max heat even after 30 mins of driving

Is it a 90 or 110? My wife has a 110LX and it does low 40s with quite a lot of short journeys. I'd expect about 45 from it on my commute. My Xantia estate with the 110HDi was doing 46ish until the cat broke up internally and blocked the exhaust. I haven't removed the cat yet but I expect full mpg to be restored when I do.

It might benefit from an oil and filter (oil, air and fuel) change and a good long run.

I mean is the engine getting to the required running temp, the fact the heater isnt very hot could be a sign the thermostat is defective.

Don't believe the fuel computer, they can be hopelessly inaccurate. Work it out manually between fill ups.

Edit: Sorry, I just re-read your original post and noticed that you have already checked this with a calculator !

Is a C5 that heavy or do you think it has problems?

I'm not trying to rub it in but in the Xantia 110 HDi I had I drove up to Glasgow (from Shefiield) with a car trailer and came back with a XM on it, the Xantia did 40mpg overall.

That's only slightly more than I get from my XM 2.5TD!

It could just be that you haven't quite got used to the HDi engine yet. It took me a while to get full economy on my Xantia HDi because I was driving it like a 1.9. I've noticed this phenomenon a few times when I've bought a new car. Another problem I had was that I couldn't resist flooring it when leaving towns or roundabouts.
