Tank gurgled

Post by MikeT »

Last night, with just under half a tank of oil/diesel, following a short drive to the recycle bins, I removed the fuel cap and heard the fuel gurgling down the pipe as if I'd just poured a load in. Anyone diagnose why that happened?

Second question. Are turbo's providing boost pressure when cruising at a constant speed (at, say, 3Krpm)?

Excess fuel is sent back to the tank via a return line so i wouldnt be concerned with gurgling, diesel tanks are always noisy more so when they have veg in them.

The turbo wont be producing any pressure unless it is underload so cruising on a flat bit of road at 3k isnt going to be boosting enough to feel, up hill may be different though.

Ah, yes, the return line. Makes sense! I can't be sure but I think I heard a hiss of pressure/vacuum when I took off the cap - will check next time.

Cheers.

I used to have a nissan sunny that always hissed when I opened the fuel tank for filling. My dad dismissed my fears telling me it was just a vacume because the fuel pump has been sucking or something.
I was probably owrried it was petrol fumes leaking or something.

It would concern me too, from what I understand, the tank should have a breather to equalise pressure otherwise they'd implode, surely?

Having said that, I read about some Ford cars that, if you don't create an air-tight seal with the cap, the ECU throws up a fault. :?

Just check the breather hole, used to be in the cap. I have seen tanks collapsed from blocked breathers.
