What engine oil to use?

Post by XantiaMan »

I currently run 15w 40 cheapy diesel mineral oil in my 1.9 TD Xantia, used the same in my other cars and they still had honing marks and original turbos, what do other people use?

With the winter coming up i would like to go to a 10w 40 semi, maybe even a 5w 40 to improve economy but generally these are only FS.

My car has only needed a 1/2 litre top up in 4000 miles so consumption is not really an issue.

I only use cheap oil as long as it has the 'CF' spec, about £7.00 per 5 litres. My last XM had done nearly 300k when I sold it, still running and also my last CX25 dtr turbo, which had covered 262k. I do change it every 5k though.

Ran on Valvoline diesel 15/40 for years (BX and 2 Xantias), now we've got the Xsara which expects semi synth 10w/40 I'm running the 2.1td Xantia on the same stuff. Must say the car seems to run better with it and the mpg looks to have improved by around 2 mpg. Buying it in 25 litre barrels it works out at about £2 litre which is similar to the price I was paying for mineral 15w/40 in 5 litre cans.

Subjectively, my TDs have always seems to run better and quieter on 10W40 Semi.

I just go to National Tyres, hand them the voucher from their website that i print off and get the oil and filter done by them for £20 each time :) Its semi synth stuff they use and does the job well and i change every 3-4k even though the later 1.9td xantias say to have it done every 10k i think thats too far between changes..

Due to running veg oil (which can seep into and contaminate the oil) I change mine every 3K but use any cheap oil as long as it meets or exceeds the standards specified.

What make did you use? I used to use Comma 10w 40 for diesels, was about 12 quid. Mine is due for a change now so i'll be trying a 10w 40 semi, i tend to notice a difference in how it revs.

I use comma when I'm broke and its reasonably good.
I find gtd magnetec is the best its smooth and the car doesn't feel like it needs a service after 4k like with cheaper oils.
Love to try fully synthetic but magnetic is really splashing out if your a student.

Big thanks for that. Was just preparing myself to buy something to drain it into & to take the old filter off. Messy b*****d job I really can't be bothered doing so if I can get someone to do it for £20 I'm delighted.

Thanks again. =D>

KP, they wouldn't wear it.

Phoned to arrange & all was fine. got there tonight & the boss man said no. "That deal's not for diesels & it's from £20 on the voucher. Price is £36 + disoposal of the old oil."

Told them where to stick it. Looks like you've got a nice guy in charge of your local Nat Tyres.
