Accelerator cable...

Post by XantiaMan »

Snapped! Right in the middle of the M25 last night!

Took RAC 45 minutes to get there which isnt bad, it had snapped at the pedal end? Dunno if this is a known thing or not, the clutch cable/clip i knew about so i wasnt expecting this.

Still, after getting Archie the labrador and Vicky the pregnant girlfriend safe on the hard shoulder i assisted the patrolman in fitting a temp inner cable which did highlight the fact the cable throughout the whole of yesterday was starting to fray, as i've got my performance back!

Does anyone know what part number i need for my car, and roughly how much a new cable is? 1997 1.9TD Xantia.

GSF used to do a universal kit which contains enough bits to fit about any Citroen - and even has a pot of oil!

It was about £11 when I bought one several years ago.

If the inner has frayed it may be wise to replace the outer which mau have grooved.

Just a hint - don't clip the thing to the pedal until you are sure everything is right - the nylon expanding wings which hold it in place are difficult to get out again. Make sure this joint isn't stressed on the new one or the wings will snap - releasing the cable from the pedal. ie the throttle should be fully open with the pedal on the floor not before.

Incidentally if the wings do break off it may be possible to hold the nylon clip in the pedal hole by screwing a suitably sized nut onto the nylon.

Still available from GSF:

N71204 ACCELERATOR CABLE KIT XANTIA EXC HDI 14.20

+ VAT of course....!

Easy enough to fit on the Xantia - the worst bit is working out which bits you need, and - if the spring cannister is fitted - threading them on the cable in the right order before fitting the cable to the car. Surprisingly there is plenty of room down the back of the engine to get to the bulkhead end of the cable! For easy fitting of the cable to pedal just remove the pedal - only one 10mm nut IIRC to remove it from the floor.

Went to GSF this morning (after the cable broke again just before going through the dartford tunnel) and got the kit. However the fitting i need to go at the pump end is wrong, would anyone be able to donate the linkage that is attached to the pump end for me? i've clamped it with a bolt for the time being but im not happy with the arrangement. Also a pic of the original arrangement would be good.

What pump do you have? Bosch or the other one?

Also you will find it easier going from the pedal end to the pump, when mine snapped just out side my house after a 500 mile round trip, i left all the tubing in place and just replaced the cable, its been fine ever since.

If you have a Bosch pump i can get you a picture of my fittings for you?

It's a Bosch pump.

I've seen a small pic in the haynes manual, looks like the original fitting at the end of the inner cable had a nipple on the end of it, which then slotted into the plastic bit of the linkage. The bit i have has a grub screw which would require a nice clean cut of the cable (i dont have any decent cutters) and i do trust the grub screw method as it only lasted about an hour.. May just drill a bolt, 2 nuts underneath and two flat washers to squash the cable - job done!

The bit you've got (a small cylinder with a tapped hole in the top and a small screw) is the standard arrangement for after market cables. Worked OK on my Xantia for 20k miles, and has been working on the ZX for a few k miles now. Just do the screw up tight!

I should have dismantled mine to check but I think you just insert the cable into the hole in the sleeve and screw down onto it.

my xantia 1.9TD throttle cable goes through a plastic clinder, a couple of inches long, which clips to the side of the air box.

What does this cylindrical do-dah do?

Well that's one way to get it to the end of a stage!

Although they made it, it also looks very dangerous!
