Exhaust / Catalytic converter Xantia

Post by Garysz »

I'm looking for some advice. The downpipe to the catalytic converter has broken and I am being given prices from £100 to £400 for a new cat!

The car is a Xantia series 2 (facelift) HDI. Most dealers say that there are two replacments listed. The system as fitted has only a cat and arear silencer box. According the the local citroen dealer it should have a cat, resonator box and rear silencer. It looks as if I can pick up a new cat for between £100 and £150 - I'm being quoted £350 to fit a replacment at an exhaust centre (this is renown as the cheapest, for tyres, in Hampshire).

Can anyone confirm what I need?

Does it matter whether I have a 2/3 box system?

How difficult is it to fit an exhaust without a ramp? What fittings do I need?

Who would you trust to confirm what system I need - citroen dealer or exhaust centre.

If you register with PR net (service.citroen.com) you can get an exploded diagram of what should be fitted. There you can get OEM prices which will be expensive.

To compare pattern prices, try euro car parts and GSF car parts. They're website online shop lists are pretty easy to navigate.

HTH

p.s. I noticed GSF do a "catalyst repair pipe" for appx £20 but have no idea what it is or whether it's any help to you but thought I'd let you know.

As diesels don't require a catalyst in order to pass an MOT, you could do what's been done on my HDi by way of getting a stainless/steel section made up to replace the cat itself and welded to the downpipe.

IIRC ECP charge about £150ish for the cat section.

I'd ditch the cat too, dickieg is correct, it's not a necessity to pass the mot, not sure how the 'additional breathing' might affect the running of the hdi engine and/or turbo usage.

i removed the cat on my 1.9TD what a differance in get up and go, with the 1.9 TD there is a ready made section wich fits exactly where the down pipe/cat were, as it is ment for the pre cat cars, the same straight through pipe fits both saloon and estates, i done know if it fits the HDIs

I bypassed the catbox when it broke on my HDi Xantia (90bhp) with a piece of pipe, and it now goes like the clappers and uses less fuel.

Thanks very much for all your help - more help here than a dealer!

I believe I have identified the part required, now I've got to find someone to fit it! Is it a half hour job to trained mechanic with a ramp?

I can't believe how cheap these people are!

http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk

They only want £20 for my exhaust pipe while GSF are quoting £38.
